The only independent city on the New River in Virginia, the city's history can be traced to the earliest days of westward movement following the American Revolution. Mary Draper Ingles mad her home in Radford following the "Long Walk Home." Radford recently made a name for itself by cooking, what was at the time, the world's longest hot dog according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Radford is home to Radford University. The Highlanders compete in Division 1-A men's basketball and have competed in March Madness in the past.
