New Quick-to-Read, Free Newspapers Attract Non-readers of Traditional Daily Newspapers 11/24/2003
Free newspapers, A.K.A. “Commuter Dailies,” is a new and simple concept that targets 18-34-year-old busy, young, trend-setters. Commuter Dailies, which can be read in approximately 20 minutes, attract those who do not typically have time to read traditional newspapers. Similar to the Internet, these newspapers provide their readers with information-filled news articles written mostly by The Associated Press. In order to provide a more concise daily, these newspapers only have one section, usually 20 to 50 pages, with world news, national news, local news, entertainment and sports. This concept has been tested in Europe and is making its way to the United States in major metro areas, including Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas, New York and Washington D.C. with over 800,000 circulation combined.
